The Swiss Morgane Metraux leads the women’s golf tournament through two rounds after recording a score of 66 on Friday, including an Olympic record 8-under 28 – with a pair of eagles – on the front nine at Le Golf National.

Metraux calmed down on the final nine holes with five pars, two bogeys and a birdie to finish at 8 under heading into Friday’s third round.

China’s Yin Ruoning is just behind Metraux in second place at 7 under after shooting the best round of the day with a 65.

Frenchwoman Céline Boutier, who led after the first round, shot a 76 on Thursday and fell to 3 under and tied for sixth.

American Nelly Korda, reigning gold medalist, climbed the rankings Thursday with six birdies on the 15th hole, but had a finish to forget. After hitting the water on his tee shot on the 136-yard 16th, his drop shot found the greenside bunker. She would make a quadruple bogey, then a bogey 17 before finishing her round with a birdie to get to 2 under and tied with Rose Zhang.

“Unfortunate to have played 16 holes of such solid golf, feeling really good out there and the wind was blowing just to my left,” Korda told Golf Channel of the 16th hole. “I didn’t hit my nine iron very well. I was between my pitching wedge and my nine iron and I went for the longer club. … If this had happened on day four, I would have Really, really heartbroken, but I know I have 36 holes left to make something happen.”

The other American in the field, Lilia Vu, also had a tough day, shooting 73 to finish at 1 under.

Other notable scores after two rounds: the New Zealander Lydia Ko (-5, 3rd), the Slovenian Pia Babnik (-4, T4), the Colombian Mariajo Uribe (-4, T4), the Australian Minjee Lee (+1 , T22) and Canadian Brooke. Henderson (+3, T29).

Golf is back for the third consecutive Olympic Games. After being an event at the 1900 and 1904 Olympic Games, it only reappeared at Rio 2016.

As with the men, the women’s tournaments will feature 72-hole stroke play. There is no cut, so each of the 60 participating women is eligible to play all four rounds.

The women’s tournament ends on Saturday. American Scottie Scheffler won men’s gold, while Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood took silver and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama took bronze.
