Bernie Sanders’ tough love for the Harris campaign

Last night at the Democratic National Convention, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont urged Americans to support Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for president.

Simple enough? Well, maybe not.

Any astute observer knows that Sanders has a notoriously shaky relationship with the Democratic establishment. And so far, he has been sparing in his praise of Harris’ campaign.

Meanwhile, constituencies where Sanders has polled strongly for years — young people, minorities and progressives — have been among the weak spots in President Joe Biden’s coalition, prompting many Democrats to clamor for his replacement.

Now, with the election just 75 days away, those same Democrats are betting that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz can shore up these key factions. And they ask for Bernie’s help.

With that in mind, Playbook co-author and Deep Dive host Ryan Lizza spoke with Sanders on the CNN-Politico Grill to get a more candid view of the Harris campaign than you’ll hear at the DNC stump speech.

During their conversation, they talked about how he thinks Joe Biden should have stepped aside in the first place; how Democrats can win back young people, minorities and progressives; and where he agrees with Harris’s politics and where he thinks she needs to come in his direction a little to win.
